Human Rights Report: 2,138 Arrests and 346 Wounded in Chile

[resumen.cl] A new report released at midday this Wednesday put figures for arrests at 2,138 and wounded at 376. Of the 2,138 people arrested, 898 are in Santiago, and 1,240 are in the other regions of the country. Of the total number of 376 wounded, 173 were wounded by firearms.

The report mentions 5 people murdered directly by agents of the state.

In all 44 legal proceedings have been issued, of which 9 habeas corpus petitions and 35 criminal complaints.

There have been reports of torture carried out by agents of the state at Baquedano underground station.

This Wednesday morning, the INDH (National Institute of Huaman Rights) went public with a report of torture by state agents in Baquedano underground station in central Santiago. The station is not far from Plaza Italia, where most protest marches in the capital begin.

Institute Director Sergio Micco told Radio Cooperativa:

Members of the armed forces reportedly tortured persons who arrested during protests in central Santiago.  'We appeal for peace based in justice,' they stated.

 

Early this morning, we received a serious report on what is happening in Baquedano.

 

We went there with 2 judges and the police. INDH are awaiting the results of the inquiry.

3 Complaints for Sexual Assault

The INDH have submitted 3 criminal complaints of prisoners being stripped and forced to do squats. 'This is improper in a normal situation, as well as a constitutional state of exception', adding that it is a practice that has been seen in previous years.

'We have submitted criminal complaints for alleged human rights violations.' The purpose of these complaints is to investigate whether the police and armed forces have committed homicide.
